Using Paypal... too risky?

I received an email this week from an online auction newbie. She wants to try buying on eBay, but she is hesitant to put her trust in Paypal, as it requires linking into your bank account.

The problem is that eBay’s current payment system leave buyers with few options. With eBay’s new rules, sellers are not permitted to advertise their willingness to accept alternate payment options on their actual eBay listings. However, sellers can still accept checks or money orders for payment if a request is made by the buyer.

While I did not explain that option in my response to Cyndi below, for those uncomfortable with Paypal it could be worth a try as well.

I'm interested in purchasing some items on ebay, but I don't want to be involved in pay pal or anything that would connect to my bank account. Do you know of anyone or any businesses that will do the purchasing for you on ebay? Or do you have any suggestions for someone like me who doesn't want to take financial risks like pay pal?

Hi Cyndi,

While some eBay sellers may have the capability to accept credit cards themselves, Paypal is really the way to go if you want to buy or sell on eBay. Your bank account is not at risk, as Paypal will only access your account if you exceed the balance you have in your Paypal account.

I have been using Paypal for years and never experienced any problems using it as a buyer. As a seller -- yes. They will freeze your funds if there is a dispute over the item purchased. If you only want to buy, that policy only serves to protect you.

I do not know of any services that will buy for you. If you really don't want to try Paypal, maybe you can ask a friend or family member to do a favor by purchasing for you. Or link your Paypal account to a separate bank account that doesn't carry a large balance as a way of testing the waters.

Lack of signage leads to weekend exploration ...and delicious lemon squares!

On our way to an advertised estate sale over the weekend and there were no signs posted anywhere! Don’t you hate that?

And then there’s the issue of people who have tag sales and never remove their old signs... These things can be awfully frustrating for us bargain hunters!

I recalled the general directions, but not the specific street name... We never found the sale, but it was a lovely ride through Woodstock on a colorful Autumn morning. Living in the Quiet Corner of Connecticut, we often overlook things to do and see just beyond our own backyards. Such was the case with the charming country tea house we discovered, situated just beyond the Woodstock Fairgrounds.

One one side of the dirt lot is a picturesque little country store selling fudge, candy, dried herb mixtures, a few antiques, cast irons pans, and handcrafted wisk brooms. On the other side there is an inviting tea house featuring a gift shop of all things tea-related, and a very pretty sitting area offering a variety of sandwich wraps, fresh pastries and teas of all imaginable kinds! The tea was warm and flavorful. The lemon squares there are to die for!!

With a tough economy, more online sellers; more scams

Welcome to the economic meltdown, where folks who have never before used the eBay auction site or Craigslist online classifieds might be looking for ways to generate extra cash by selling household items. Auction and classified-ad sites are prime territory for fraud. People who need the money are most vulnerable.

However, such problems are not restricted to merchandise sales online. I recently experienced reason for caution while job searching on Craigslist.

I noticed some positions listed in various categories of jobs and all of these similar ads listed rate of pay considerably higher than one might expect such a position to pay. Some of these ads seem extremely appealing. Then, once you email a resume, a reply is sent back asking you to complete an application online. Even at this point, the name and location of the company offering the job is not revealed. Yet, the online application you are asked to complete does request lots of personal information — including your social security number. Be careful!

Former Lego employee used company credit cards to buy collector toy sets and resell them on eBay

In April, Lego officials in Enfield, CT received a call from a man who told them he was a reseller of Lego products on eBay. He claimed he had recently purchased a Lego Star Wars Millennium Falcon toy set on eBay and that there was a packing slip inside the box from the company’s “Shop at Home” division addressed to the eBay seller — who turned out to be an employee of Lego.

The original cost of the item on the slip revealed a much lower price than his cost for similar products. He wanted to know how he could purchase such items at the lower price.

His inquiry touched off an investigation which revealed the seller’s improper use of her company credit card.

According to an affidavit, Linda Hegarty, 46, said she was overwhelmed by bills. She admitted to purchasing and reselling about $4,688 worth of Lego products on eBay between March and April. However, company officials told police that further investigation revealed she had been using her company credit card to make improper purchases since 2002.

Looking at the prices some of these sets can bring on eBay, it’s probably not too surprising that this is not the first time a Lego employee has been in such a situation...

Completed auction prices show that these sets can bring close to $600 each on eBay!

In 2006, three former Lego employees stole thousands of dollars worth of Star Wars-themed Lego sets while working at the Enfield distribution center and selling them on eBay. The men were each charged with first-degree larceny for stealing 140 Lego Star Wars Destroyer sets. They were required to pay restitution to the company in the amount of $17,000.

Auction to benefit Girard family to be held at NFA this Saturday

A live and silent auction to benefit the Girard family of Voluntown will be held on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Norwich Free Academy, Norwich. Items up for auction include: a hundred gallons of heating oil, a quilt, Defenders sky box tickets, signed sports memorabilia, two tickets for “A Christmas Carol” at Hartford Stage, various restaurant gift certificates, ski tickets, and numerous themed baskets and gift certificates for local merchant services. Auction preview time is 6 p.m.

The Girard family suffered through a series of setbacks, including a fire, and then Carol Girard lost her husband, Thomas, and son, Marc, in a drowning accident in July. The community has come together to help this family through various volunteer efforts and fundraisers.

Fewer yard sales are weather cools; Tonight catch a horse and tack auction

A chill is in the air, and it was surely reflected last weekend with a huge decline in the number of decent yard sales going on! I caught one on Friday and that was about it. It was held at Owen Bell Park in Dayville, in support of Killingly Youth Soccer.

Aside from Sunday's Motorcycle Swap Meet over at Stafford Speedway (and other upcomming auto swap meets in Thompson and Lake Compounce) not much else happening outdoors as November closes in.

Auctions — on the other hand — are all over the place! Tonight, catch a Horse & Tack Auction over at Danny’s Auction Barn in Foster, RI at 6 pm.

Christmas auctions are also a weekly feature at many places throughout the area, selling mostly new merchandise at amazing prices for the upcoming gift-giving season. More about info those will be posted soon!

Wednesday is half price day at Salvation Army Thrift Store in Brooklyn

I discovered this morning that I’m not the only one who knows the secret. It was a super-busy place this morning over at The Salvation Army Store in Brooklyn, CT. With two check-out lines going at once, it’s evident that more and more people are on the lookout for alternative ways to save money these days.

Every day features a discount on items with certain color tags, but on Wednesday, most everything (with few exceptions) is half price at this store location for their Family Day special.

These were the early-birds shopping during my visit today, and some of them were a little pushy... While I was surprised at the number of people sharing aisle space, I was also somewhat dismayed at the rudeness of a few. I guess people can get anxious when the prices are cut in half and every item is one-of-a-kind.

I scored at the checkout with 15 items that came to a grand total of $25!! Some of the brand names of clothing I purchased include: Abercrombie, Lands End, The Children’s Place and Disney. The average price per item: $1.66

Not too bad!

The Scituate Art Festival happens every year on Columbus Day weekend in Scituate, Rhode Island. This has to be the most beautiful event of the year — it’s one I always look forward to attending!

Obviously, there is art to be seen and sold, and artists of all kinds to meet. In addition -- there is a huge variety of creative arts and crafts on display, food and music, a fantastic library book sale and church and home yard sales too!! Add to all that, stunning scenery surrounds you, and for those who enjoy people-watching, it’s incredible! Not only people galore, but so many pet owners take this event as an opportunity to show off their dogs. I’ve saw a real assortment -- from pretty little fluffy ones with bows in their hair to others that looked downright dangerous.

This year, all three days were bright and beautiful!! I made my visit today along with my four-year-old daughter, Katelyn. The long walk to and from our parking spot was great exercise for us both — although lugging all of the books I could gather from the library sale was a bit challenging on the way back to the car for me! Katelyn did super with all the walking, but as you might expect, within five minutes of being strapped into her seat, she was fast asleep for the ride home!

Yard sale finds can bring on good times

Half the fun of checking out Saturday morning yard sales is not only discovering bargains and enjoying the beauty of a crisp Autumn day, but sometimes the smallest finds can bring the greatest enjoyment!

My 4-year-old daughter, Katie and I stopped at a yard sale in our neighborhood yesterday morning just before heading out to the Roger Williams Park in RI for our day’s activities. There was the usual assortment of pre-owned household goods, clothing spread out on tarps over the lawn, and boxes overflowing with stuffed animals of all kinds...

But they also had a great selection of old music CDs — some of the songs brought back memories of sounds I enjoyed from the past, but I hadn’t heard in a long, long time!

Such was the case with Carly Simon’s Greatest Hits Live album. I’ve always loved the sweet smoothness of her voice. I picked out that CD from a pile where it was amid so many others. (I have to say, the assortment at that yard sale was incredible!)

I spotted the Itsy Bitsy Spider song on the list. Knowing how much Katie loves to sing along in the car with me, I thought here was a great opportunity for her to hear it done a little differently — not your typical nursery rhyme rant! I gladly put out the dollar — not only to revisit reminiscent songs of way-back-when for me — but to involve my daughter in a fun musical experience we could both share in together.

Sure enough, as I pushed the button to hear track number 10, Katie had the words down pat! She chimed in as soon as the spider part came on. Katie even asked me to play it again, making for a happy car ride as we continued on our way to the zoo!

I hopped online and logged onto eBay when we got home last night to buy the CD Katie’s older siblings enjoyed almost a decade earlier: ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE: BEATLES SONGS FOR KIDS. Once about a time, that music was played and replayed constantly in my car! I think Katie will love singing to those songs too...

State of RI to hold an unclaimed property auction Saturday

You may be familiar with the list of names that comes out periodically through state treasurers for unclaimed funds. Here’s something different. For the first time in nine years, the state of Rhode Island is holding a public auction of unclaimed property.

Unclaimed property consists of money and other assets that are considered lost or abandoned after an owner cannot be located for a specific period of time. This auction includes gold and silver coins, old paper money, and gold and sterling silver rings, bracelets, necklaces and pins. There will be sports cards and stamp collections. But the highlight of the event is expected to be a three-handle sterling silver Tiffany Trophy Cup from 1898.

These items will be displayed in the conference room on the 2nd floor of the Administration building, located at One Capitol Hill, Smith Street in Providence. Public viewing of the auction items is scheduled for Thursday and Friday evenings from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, October 4th from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

The auction will take place on Saturday, October 4th at 10 a.m. and it’s all over when everything has been sold.

A shoreline landmark: Saybrook Lighthouse may be auctioned

Because of the high costs involved for maintenance and upkeep of historic lighthouses, an amendment to the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act in 2000 makes it possible for private citizens to bid for eligible lighthouses at auction. As part of the amendment, lighthouses are offered first to to state or local governments or non-profits for free. But if no group or agency comes forward to take over ownership, public auctions have become an option.

Now there is news that a Connecticut shoreline landmark, the Saybrook Outer Light, may be auctioned.

Apparently, maintenance on the 122-year-old lighthouse (located at the end of a half-mile-long jetty at the entrance to Old Saybrook Harbor) has become too costly for the Coast Guard. With no takers, the lighthouse will be likely be auctioned online.

In Rhode Island, the Hog Island Shoal Lighthouse was sold at auction to private buyers. The lighthouse was placed on the auction block on May 23, 2006. The winning bidders, Jon and Juli Chytka of South Dakota, paid $165,000 and were required to negotiate a "submerged lands" lease with the state Coastal Resources Management Council.

Juli placed the winning bid from a cafe in Paris, France. Her husband, a lieutenant colonel in the Army was deployed in Iraq at the time. As the property is on the National Register of Historic Places, the new owners must adhere to strict guidelines in any restorative work. That lighthouse is located near Bristol and Portsmouth and can be viewed from the Mount Hope Bridge.

It’s the season for yard sales!

Warm sunshine and crisp breezes, colorful surroundings and the crinkle of leaves underfoot, Fall is my absolute favorite time of year. What better way to spend a weekend morning to enjoy it all than to hit up a few yard sales around town?

This weekend is packed with great opportunities to hunt out bargains. My pick for the Plainfield area is the Sunny Brook Neighborhood Yard Sale. Streets included are: Park Avenues, Easy Street, Spring Street, James Street, Robin Road, Linda Lane, Ann Street, Birch Street and South Pine Street. It takes place September 27th and 28th from 8 am to 2 pm.

While you’re out and about, why not check out the Fall Festival at Plainfield Catholic School on Railroad Avenue? There will be fun activities for the kids and raffles galore for everyone and proceeds support the school!

Other big yard sales will be happening this weekend in Danielson, East Killingly, Brooklyn, Pomfret, Woodstock and North Grosvenordale! You can explore the Quiet Corner and take in the best of features of the season too.

Two years ago, I purchased a kids lobster costume at a tag sale that brought me $65 on eBay. There are retailers selling common costumes on eBay in bulk, so those aren’t as likely to fetch a bunch. But if you have something different, custom-made, something even just a little bit odd... Chances are you’ll have excellent results selling them NOW on eBay. Hey — my lobster costume even had a stain on it, clearly pointed out in the photos and description!

Photos! What’s it like to sell at the 4th Annual Mammoth Moosup Neighborhood Yard Sale?

This was an experience! Yesterday was my first time selling at an event like this, the 4th Annual Mammoth Moosup Neighborhood Yard Sale. My sons helped for three straight days in preparation, setup and sales. We’re doing it today too!

I had more stuff out on the front lawn than I ever realized I had in storage! Because of the overnight rain, we waited to set up very early on Saturday. It was still dark outside.

I had three big tables and 4 shelving units for displays, plus numerous bins positioned throughout the selling zone. As expected, a few early birds showed up before we were really ready, and as the crowd came upon us, I wasn't even set up completely. And while I wasn’t able to leave my post for more than a minute here and there, a couple of runs back into the house, and I realized there were a few forgotten items that didn’t quite make it outside for starting time.

The crowd was heavy & steady up until 2:00 or so. I sent my boys out to get a pizza by early afternoon since we hadn’t a moment to eat earlier, and we were starving by then!

Some of my best sales for day 1 were a carnival glass footed bowl, a box lot of audio books on tape, and a new-in-the-box tire clock! Numerous shoppers browsed around and picked out an assortment of items, on which I am always eager to make a deal!

One disheartening discovery... At certain times, we were so busy that I wasn’t able to keep a careful eye on everybody. I realized later while cleaning up at the end of the day that an item was stolen: a gorgeous hand-blown art-glass garden ball. Sad.

However, today is a new day! Lots of great deals will be offered as I’m giving it another shot — just to clean up as much as possible of what’s left. C’mon by and say "hi"!!

Getting ready for the 4th Annual Mammoth Moosup Neighborhood Yard Sale to be held Saturday!! Here’s a list of some of the items I’ll have on my front lawn for sale.

There will be a lot of sporting goods and sneakers! I purchased a huge lot from a dealer at the auction who had bought the contents of a sporting goods store that was closing. What I have left — after putting the bulk of it on eBay — are Nike cleats for adults and kids, Pony sneakers for boys in sizes 1 — 3, close to a dozen football helmets with the face masks, new in the box hockey helmets, football and hockey shoulder pads, padded hockey pants, shin pads, shoulder & elbow pads for kids, and lots of hockey skate laces. I also have a new pair of men’s roller blades. Then I have a few collectable bobblehead figures for baseball lovers and a couple of Disney Mickey Mouse football bobble-heads for different teams. For clothing, there are a few shirts and shorts by Reebok — new with tags!! These look like they’d be great for bicyclists, snug fitting Play-Dry fabric. Finally, for sports fans there are some men’s Patriots Super Bowl winners T-shirts available in size XXL. These are heavy-weight and of great quality — offered at bargain prices!!

A most anticipated event for bargain hunters throughout eastern Connecticut is happening THIS Saturday!! The 4th Annual Mammoth Moosup Neighborhood Yard Sale.

I’ve recently become a resident of this area, so guess what? I’ll be selling.

That means I’ve been scoping out items around my home to be included in the yard sale. Beyond that, I have a ton of leftover merchandise I purchased in lots over the last two years to sell on eBay! As it turns out, not everything you might guess will sell well online, does.

For me and all of my neighbors in Moosup, it’s a great time to combat Pack Rat Disease — and for anyone else who may be planning a yard sale, it’s time to get organized! Gather anything in your home that hasn’t been used within the past year. Items may be “still good” or “worth keeping”, but not if you’re not going to use it! No more “saving it for someday” while you struggle to find what you need in over-packed closets. If you have children, think about toys that aren’t being used and any clothing that may have been outgrown. Consider selling old dishes, duplicate items you don't really need, unused Christmas gifts, and really "clean house". Take this opportunity to clear out and make better use of the space you have!

Collectibles: With younger generations, it's just not the same

What’s collectible these days?

Certainly not Avon bottles, Bradford Exchange plates, or Beanie Babies! These items are easily found at yard sales and flea markets. There’s hardly a hand up to bid at auctions — even when offered in lots at dirt cheap prices.

There was a time when it was popular to collect by theme. Typical subject matter included animals, fairies, wizards, and nautical items such as lighthouses. Not so much anymore.

With the flood of cheap goods from China having been brought into the US to target those markets in recent years, it’s hardly a challenge to come across common “themed” gift items, such as figurines, ornaments, and “collectible” boxes for display in the home.

Scented candles? Certainly popular, there’s a lot more out there besides Yankee — and they’re in every store at every price range.

Older generations collected and proudly showed off their treasures inside locked curio cabinets. What was “collectible” back then was hard-to-find and something to save your money for.

My grandmother had a wonderful passion for Waterford crystal. Displayed lovingly in her home were intricate bowls and cherished glassware. As children, we were told not to touch it. No longer in demand, I’ve come across boxes of Waterford crystal at auctions, loose and sometimes even unwrapped! You’re lucky to see an entire lot of it bring more than $10 now.

High-end collectibles of yesteryear like Hummels and Lladro Figurines are all over eBay. These can often be purchased today for less then the original cost. Has the ease in finding whatever your heart desires lessened the desire?

Younger generations want instant satisfaction. When a demand exists, items are made in quantity. And while these things may be cute and appealing, or feature a popular character or brand name (e.g., Coca-Cola), etc... They aren’t made with the same quality of years go. If it’s popular, you’ll find a lot of it.

Today’s world is a throw-away society. Once the trend is over or our interest has waned, it’s not worth keeping. Plus, lifestyles have changed. People today are super-busy and often on-the-run. Most of us don’t want the clutter in our homes. There’s no time to dust!

In difficult times, treasure what’s most valuable

Things haven’t been easy for me in recent months. Last Spring, my husband and I separated. For the first time in my adult life, I’m on my own -- with three children at home. In August, my car was hit in the rear by an uninsured driver. Then as of yesterday, my position with the newspaper was eliminated, and I am now without a job.

That’s a lot to handle within a few months’ time.

While it’s been difficult for sure, there’s one thing I’ve found that’s been truly wonderful and amazing. It’s family. And those people who care, they've really come through!

When I first moved into my own place, funds were short and the oil tank was empty. My elderly grandfather and my mother both helped to get me a delivery.

When after splitting up a household, I didn’t have a few basics... Some of those things came from the most unexpected sources. (Thank you!!)

My oldest daughter is 17. I’m very proud of her. She goes to school, cheerleads, and holds a job. With my work schedule, I wasn’t always available to drive her where she needed to go, when she needed to get there. She has her driver’s license, but there was no way in my situation that I could have bought her a car.

Kayla had been estranged from her father. They hadn’t spoken in a very long time. But he spotted a decent car with a sign on it on the side of the road and checked it out. With some of Kayla’s savings and help and contributions from various relatives (along with a bit of haggling to get the price down as low as possible!) — through a true combination of efforts — Kayla now has a car and she drives herself to school and work.

Especially wonderful: Her older brother, who at 22 is now living on his own and struggling to make ends meet himself, contributed towards the cost of Kayla’s car. And her step-father — he generously put four new tires on it to ensure her safety.

The added plus — Kayla and her father are speaking again.

Certainly, smart shopping your “Bargain Avenues” can make things easier for those on tight budgets. Finding quality second-hand clothing at thrift stores, searching out great deals on eBay, and knowing how to identify sellable collectibles at garage & yard sales can help to stretch dollars.

And while finding a great price on gas today in RI was terrific...

KEEP IN MIND: Our most precious assets are not likely to be found at a gas pump or hidden inside a plastic storage bin at the flea market...

My mom and my kids

What is most valuable in our lives is all around us. It’s there, in the people we interact with every day. Kayla’s 17 year-old boyfriend, David, who changed her oil and cleaned her car inside and out, expecting nothing in return. (And let’s not forget how many times he drove her to work when I couldn’t!) My mother who calls me regularly, just to see how I’m feeling, and if there’s anything she can help me with... My 19 year-old son, Ryan, who comes over in a heartbeat from RI to cut my grass and also tackles my household to-do list! The people who hugged me when I lost my job. There’s so much more...

Some things are just simple joys.

Attention toy collectors: Info needed for vintage Matchbox doctor and nurse pair

Here is a pair of diecast Matchbox figures -- looks like a doctor and a nurse. Each stands three inches tall and has large feet with metal ball bearings (rollers) underneath. On both, the left thumb is pointing upwards... or maybe they're holding something no longer with them? Marked on the bottom, with the words, "MATCHBOX and Lesney Products & Co 1978... pat app 15147/78".

I just posted this cute Matchbox / Lesney doctor and nurse pair on eBay for a friend. What's unusual is that I've been unable to locate another pair like them online anywhere! That leaves me with no clue for a starting price. I'm guessing they may be part of a larger toy set.

Man caught selling stolen bras on eBay

Okay. So I’ve recently blogged about a stolen Harley-Davidson motorcycle that was discovered on eBay 34 years later, a guy who tried to sell “borrowed” library books, another illegally copying movies & television shows onto DVDs and posting those on eBay... Interested in hearing about another creative criminal with an idea for making money on eBay? Here’s a new one!

A 41 year-old New York man has been caught selling stolen Victoria Secret bras on eBay. Normally sold anywhere between $40 to $80 a piece, he offered eBayers bargain bra prices at just $25 each.

Records found in his home link him to the sale of more than 2,000 bras. And, another 650 stolen bras were discovered there!

The Brimfield Antiques Show in Massachusetts has been a most popular attraction for antiques enthusiasts since the 1950’s. Brimfield is a quaint, picturesque rural New England town. The the town's 35 square miles are surrounded by apple orchards and wooded hills in the foothills of the Berkshires.

The shows runs three times a year, this week it's from September 2-7.

IF YOU GO...

Get there early to secure a good parking location. Spots fill quickly. Keep in mind how often you might need to haul items back to your car.
Be prepared for changes in the weather. Dress appropriately in layers. Don't forget comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, and a hat. When the weather is bad, the crowd is smaller, and so you’ll have more bargaining power if you hang in there!
Bring cash. It’s the preferred method of payment for most dealers, and using it will give you an advantage when haggling.
Bring a backpack, wagon, or cart to help in transporting whatever you buy. Some things can be awkward to carry.
Carry your own water. It’s not always easy to find a drink at the show.
Dealers expect you to bargain. Don’t hesitate to ask, "What’s your best price?".
If you see something you want, don’t wait to return later, it may be gone. Pay for it and ask the dealer if they’ll hold it for you. That way, you can pick it up on your way back to your vehicle. Remember where the dealer is located, and don’t forget to find out when they’ll be closing up!
If you plan on returning to a specific booth, be sure to write down the name of the show venue/field and the booth number. It may not be so easy to locate later in the day!
If you’re looking for something in particular, ask a dealer who is displaying similar items. Even if they don’t have it, you can get great recommendations.
If you’re a collector, it’s a good idea to hand out business cards printed with what items you’re looking for, your name and contact information. (VistaPrint is a great resource for these! Simple cards can be created online at a very reasonable cost. )

Some of the shows charge admission, typically $5.00. You can purchase tickets at those fields on the days and morning prior to their opening.

Used Apple iPhones are hot sellers on eBay

After the iPhone 3G launch, consumers want the original, hackable iPhone, and vendors are springing up to sell them — for a premium.

On eBay, a 16-GB version of the first-generation iPhone isn going for about $600, and an 8-GB model in good condition commands $500. When it was new, the 16-GB phone sold for $499. The 8-GB model went for $399. Today, AT&T's most expensive iPhone 3G model sells for $300 with a two-year service contract. "The old iPhone (in mint condition) is very hard to find," says Shawn Zade, who sells mobile phones through New York-based WirelessImports.com. "There's a lot of demand."

Why will buyers pay a premium for an older, less advanced model? Some users don't want to be tied to a long-term contract with AT&T -- the only authorized iPhone carrier in the U.S. The old phones can be unlocked fairly easily, making it possible for people to choose another carrier or to simply use the device with no charge at Wi-Fi hot spots. Currently, there's no way to reliably unlock the iPhone 3G.

Today’s wonderful little yard sale in Pomfret

What a sweet and charming place!

Katie and I ventured out early this morning to hit a few yard sales before the rain. There were two great ones on Route 97 in Pomfret. One was held inside and out, by an old barn, and the other was at the home next door, held in this charming little out-building! The photo above shows the place... Signs by the road led visitors to a grassy area for parking, sunflowers in the back added to the charm. It was simply lovely!

Inside were lots of treasures of yesteryear. I purchased three unique items — a decorative wooden plate hand-painted with strawberries on it, a pretty lace window curtain, and a vintage kitchen utensil that I'm almost sure is an old potato masher -- which cost me a total of one whole dollar!

It's just the kind of atmosphere that makes the Quiet Corner a wonderful place to discover!

It's back-to-school time! What to know when buying a used musical instrument

It's that time of year again! With the costs of back-to-school clothes and classroom supplies having just hit us, parents of students interested in learning how to play a new musical instrument must consider if buying a brand new one is within their reach. Rentals are an option, but so is buying used. While some instruments being sold secondhand have surely seen better days, there are opportunities to buy gently used instruments in still-good condition for much less than new.

How to start:

-- Know your Prices

Check on what the instrument costs brand new. Look around at different shops, and make comparisons of prices and conditions of used instruments.

It's a good idea to research prices online.

Where to look:

Bulletin boards at your local food market or music store
eBay
Newspaper classifieds and Craigslist
Pick up one of those publications you might find at a convenience store specializing in selling used merchandise.
Go to flea markets and swap meets
Browse yard and garage sales

-- Ask Questions

Talk to the previous owner if you can. Find out how often the instrument was used and why it's being sold. Even if you're considering a purchase of a used instrument from a shop, it doesn't hurt to ask if you can speak with the original owner.

-- Borrow a Musician
Have someone with knowledge about musical instruments look over the instrument you are considering. A friend who plays or a music teacher may be willing to give you an honest assessment of the overall condition. That person will know by how it sounds and how it feels while playing it if there is reason for any concern.

Remember, there is always risk involved when buying anything previously owned. However, chances are better if you do a little homework first that you'll find something decent and save a bundle too!

Earlier this month, a mother in New York posted an ad on Craigslist for a live-in nanny. Her ad was brutally honest about her expectations, her attitude, and her children. Her first sentence: “My kids are a pain.”

Now, that's something we could use more of in the classifieds!

Imagine the sense of comfort you'd have in knowing the ugly truth about the used car you're thinking about buying and that it will be at the repair shop in the very near future!

Thefts of metals for scrap an increasing problem — here & everywhere!

Apparently, scrap metal continues to fetch top dollar at recycling facilities. Close to home and across the country, thefts of metal from homes and public areas has become a widespread problem.

Just yesterday, a neighbor was telling me of a home under construction nearby on Squaw Rock Road in Moosup that was broken into for the newly-installed copper piping inside.

Today, two news stories were released reporting thefts of unusual items you might never expect being stolen for scrap...

Thieves are grabbing stainless steel kegs in alleyways behind bars and breweries or not returning them after use to sell for scrap metal. Empty kegs are selling for $30 and up, according to the Beer Institute, an industry trade group.

And, then -- crazy as it may seem -- a couple of guys were caught in the act attempting to steal aluminum bleachers from a school in Massachusetts! Neighbors heard chainsaws and called police.

Colchester Rotary Club hosts Saturday auction

More often than flea markets and pawn shops, stolen goods show up on eBay

Recently in the news, there have been a few cases where victims of theft have discovered their own missing belongings up for auction on eBay. That's a lucky find for them, because it's a lot more probable that those listings would have gone on undetected.

Criminals turn to Internet marketplaces as a venue to sell goods due to the anonymity of buyers and sellers online. Compared to a face-to-face transaction attempting to sell merchandise from the back of a truck or to a pawn shop, it's less risky for a thief to go online. Also, it's difficult to determine if items being sold online are stolen.

To counter this growing problem, there is proposed legislation in the works known as the E-fencing Enforcement Act of 2008 which would require an operator of an online marketplace (such as eBay or Amazon.com) to retain and provide, upon request, contact information for high-volume sellers and remove listings whenever it has a "good reason to believe the goods or items were unlawfully acquired". The bill defines a high-volume seller as someone who offers a single batch of merchandise worth more than $5,000, or more than $12,000 in products over a year.

EBay officials say they already have policies aimed at verifying the legitimacy and safety of items sold on the site. The company readily provides seller information to law enforcement officials when requested, making the legislation unnecessary.

Another common scheme involves "returning" stolen goods to retail stores.

As part of the scam, merchandise is shoplifted/stolen and another identical item is purchased from a retail store. They scan the receipt into a computer to print counterfeits and later return to stores for credit in the form of gift cards. Those gift cards are then sold online.

A few warning signs for stolen goods on eBay:

Merchandise listed as NWT or "new with tags"
Priced below wholesale
Multiple items offered by one seller
Goods from a company's newest product line
Items that are not yet available in stores
Products matching descriptions of goods recently stolen in quantity
Sellers with zip codes in the same vicinity as recent thefts
Gift cards -- especially in large amounts -- from various retailers
Short auction durations
Sellers requesting money orders for payment (soon to be dis-allowed on eBay)

(Note that these conditions, when seen in combination, may be reason for caution -- not necessarily so when observed as a single condition alone.)

What about eBay buyers who won't use paypal?
Where will they turn?

Although it's evident we're evolving into a paperless society, eBay's announcement last week that sellers will no longer be permitted to offer payment by checks or money orders as an option on their listings still took some by surprise.

EBay sellers are reporting that up to 20% of their transactions these days are completed using these methods. This is especially true with older folks who may enjoy the convenience of online shopping but hesitate to rely on electronic payment options.

Will the paper-lovers conform or flee?

Shoppers will be left with few options but to utilize eBay-owned Paypal (in most cases) to send and receive payments online. It looks as though eBay is counting on that, as they stand to benefit from the extra income in Paypal fees.

But what if most of those who currently take the time and extra effort required to purchase a money or write out a check, find an envelope and address it, apply postage and get it out to the post office actually don't want to do things an easier way?

Assuming they'll conform is certainly a risk. I'm guessing there’s a high probability many will simply shop elsewhere. There are some people who feel uneasy about putting their credit card or bank information on the Internet. If they should decide to abandon the eBay shopping cart, who stands to benefit?

Wouldn't it make more sense to allow sellers the flexibility to accept any payment method they're willing to handle? That would give sellers a way to appeal to a wider market and retain buyers who are stuck with old habits.

"What’s It Worth” appraisal event in Pomfret

It was just before 9:00 a.m. on a bright Saturday morning and the cars were already parked beyond the lot of the Strong Field House and all along the side of the road within the property of Pomfret School. People hauled in bags and cardboard boxes stuffed with newspaper to cushion their treasures. A few others balanced oversized picture frames holding fine art carefully wrapped in towels.

Yesterday’s event was the 2nd annual “What’s It Worth” appraisal fair where for $5 per item, people came to find out if their antique, fine art, or collectible might possibly be valuable.

Held coincidentally on the same day Hartford hosted The Antiques Road Show, Pomfret’s event allowed for walk-in traffic.

According to Louisa Jones who helped organize the event, by opening time they already had 40 people assigned numbers. At last year’s event over 300 items were appraised and it ran 2 hours past ending time. This year, to alleviate the waiting, people were allowed to register an hour prior to the actual opening and seating was provided.

With various local businesses showcasing their wares, the event also offered an opportunity to experience the products and services that make Pomfret special.

Food from the local Lions Club was sold as well.

Michael Grogran of Grogan & Company Auctioneers in Dedham, Mass., whose son is a student at Pomfret School, handled the actual appraisals. Three employees of the company lent assistance, each with a specific area of expertise.

She received an appraisal on some silver coins. Her $1 coins were appraised at $10 each.

Eva Aubert and Dawn Abelin from Chaplin brought in a most unusual item, a Captain’s Whaling Log from New Bedford. Excited to the point of near-tears, the mother and daughter duo were given an approximate value of $5,000 for the book. They hadn’t told the appraiser that it was previously appraised at $35, 000 elsewhere. Still, they were quite excited.

Charlie and Paige Combs of Pomfret brought in a few items, including an antique chair. They were given an approximate value of $300 to $400 given that the legs had been shortened. Otherwise, it could have been much higher. Another item they had appraised was a small blue book — Hanley’s Baseball Rules from 1867.

Not being an expert in sports memorabilia, Bob Carrol of Grogan & Company wasn’t sure of an actual value. However, during the appraisal, he elaborated, saying, “If I were at a yard sale, I wouldn’t hesitate to pay $500 for it.”

The couple was given a wide rage of possible values on the book.

Carrol continued, “At a local auction, it might bring $150 and you’d be happy for that, but given the right situation, perhaps at a sports collector auction, it could realize as much as $7,500”.

The appraisal event benefits The Pomfret Proprietors Scholarship Fund.

Suzanne Ranhoff of Pomfret brought in a Russian icon for which she was given a verbal appraisal of $500.

And...

Failee Latawick and her husband, John Bergeron of East Windsor brought in a mourning portrait of John’s great-great grandmother that had been in their family for generations. Although beautiful, it was valued at just $100.

And...

Bevely Bostwick of Thompson had perhaps the most unusual item
— a crucifix in a bottle — that is approximately 110 years old and valued at $100.

Auto auctions attract deal seekers

Want to buy a car? Don't have much cash? No problem. Grab a few hundred dollars and go to an auto auction that is open to the public.

Although based in Alabama, blogger Jody Potter of Birmingham News has posted an insightful view of a public auto auction of U.S. Marshals-seized vehicles that's typical of similar car/truck auctions I've seen locally. If you're new to events like this, it's jammed with great photos and video and may be well worth checking out if you've ever considered purchasing a vehicle this way.

To bid on these vehicles, you are asked to place a deposit of $500 to cover storage fees -- should you win the bid and be unable to pay.

Reader's find: Any value in a Mersman game table?

Sent to me by Lynn in Rhode Island, this table seemed well suited for her purpose. With little space available in an open corner, she was browsing around to find a small table on which to use her laptop.

She and her husband were looking in a consignment store when they spotted this table lost over in a corner with stuff piled all around and on top of it.

She says, "What caught my eye was the legs are not straight, they curl outwards. I thought the style of the legs was called "lion feet", but the person at the store referred to them as "crow feet". The feet tips are brass, and the top folds in half. The expandable top is great!"

She remembered her grandmother having one like it that was placed against a wall with a lamp set upon it. As a child, she wasn't allowed near it. Her grandmother told her it had belonged to her mother.

After clearing the stuff away from the table at the consignment store, she noticed that the draw pulled out, and the top folded out to be completely open. On the underside, there's a tag which reads, "Mersman 7380" inside a triangle. (The marking pictured to the right is not from Lynn's table, but for those interested, it offers an idea of what it looks like.)

In doing research online later, she found that the maker most likely designed it as a game table. Similar tables were used as decorative accent tables.

In reading further, she learned:

In the 1920's the company was producing an extraordinary line of dining and occasional tables. One of its strongest sellers was the "davenport" table, the company name for what is now known as a sofa table. In 1928 alone it offered 139 varieties of davenport tables ranging in price from $12.00 to $80.00, a princely sum in 1928.

Based in Celina, Ohio, The Mersman Bros. Corporation had warehouses located in major metropolitan areas including New York, Kansas City, Milwaukee, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, Los Angeles and Minneapolis.

The product offerings in the 1920's and 1930's included a number of lines of dining tables and bedroom furnishings, but the concentration was clearly on occasional and special purpose tables. A sample product listing in 1929 includes library tables, davenport tables, davenport extension tables, console tables with or without mirrors, gateleg tables, coffee tables (among the very first) and radio table cabinets. The construction techniques and materials used by Mersman during the 20's, 30's and 40's were typical of the period.

What Lynn is curious about is the value of the table. From what I've found online, although known for excellent construction and innovative styling, Mersman tables may have little collector value today due to their overwhelming availability. She paid $125.00 for hers.

More changes on the horizon for eBay sellers

eBay reduces some listing fees, implements changes in search, and bans checks & money orders as payment options

EBay's announcement came out today.

Fees

As of September 16th, sellers will be able to list an unlimited number of fixed-price items at a set price of 35 cents each for a month at a time. Previously, those fees ran as high as $4 per item, and lasted for only a week.

Payments

As of late October, eBay will be using an electronic checkout system, and sellers will no longer have the capability of offering checks and money orders as a payment option. Accepted methods of payment will be merchant credit card accounts, ProPay, and PayPal.

Shipping

Limits on shipping charges will apply in the media categories. Incentives will be provided to sellers who offer free shipping in all categories. Listings with free shipping will get more exposure in searches and discounts on final value fees.

Minimum Seller Standards

Beginning on November 1st, eBay will require sellers to have a minimum DSR (Detailed Seller Rating) of 4.3 to be active on the site.

Can't beat this deal! Show off your best bargain finds!

A couple emailed me a few photos of a terrific bargain in used furniture they just picked up. They completed their bedroom with these pieces for just $50 and were given a free nightstand as well!

Almost as interesting as the deal itself is the unusual source for this bargain lot... They found someone advertising on Craigslist who sells house contents for attorneys handling foreclosures. While this may seem extraordinary, bargains in secondhand furniture are surprisingly common now.

With the popularity of furniture discount stores offering new pieces at very reasonable prices, not too many of us have been investing in high-end, quality furniture meant to last a lifetime. The advantage of that in our modern lives is that as tastes change, it's simply time throw away and buy new again.

However, this trend has resulted in fewer buyers competing for used furniture buys, and today's prices are steals! You're likely to discover that secondhand furniture you might find at garage sales, flea markets, and estate sales is often of higher quality than today's new.

Tips for buying used furniture:

Carefully inspect the piece. Is it made of quality wood? Check the underside. Does it have good joints and bonding glue? Is the upholstery soiled or have unpleasant odors from smoking or pets? You can reupholster, but is the piece worth the cost and effort?
Try it before you buy it. Be sure it's sturdy and comfortable. Be sure it's functional. Has the piece been altered or repaired? Does a recliner extend and retract properly? If a table includes a leaf, does it fit and stay in place?
Measure your space - The size of the rooms and the dimensions of doorways are important to know. You can't use what won't fit into the intended space. Will this piece complement existing furniture in your home? Consider spatial balance, overall design, and color tones. You don't want a single piece to overpower others. Certainly, an eclectic approach can work so long as there is a theme in the overall design, tying it all together.
Know your budget. Don't buy under pressure. There are lots of resources out there, so keep on looking! Search out garage and estate sales, flea markets, Craigslist and classified ads, online auctions, consignment stores, junk shops, rental furniture outlets, salvage yards, warehouse outlet sales, local real estate auctions, and storage unit auctions. Watch the prices and negotiate to get the best deal.

In response to those who may believe I am hurting their auction business by posting information... for example, news about the lack of bidding on the part of buyers in a tighter economy, please understand that as a blogger, I do not make the news. I simply post my opinions on current happenings in this public forum.

This is a personal blog. Simply put, it’s my personal platform online serving eastern Connecticut bargain hunters.

As a whole, this blog is a collection of my own impressions on alternative shopping venues and bargain shopping in general. Realizing that most of us who buy secondhand tend to regularly resell for profit, I discuss selling opportunities as well. Although my focus area is eastern Connecticut, because those who read my postings are obviously online, it can’t be overlooked that the Internet plays a huge part for opportunities available. For that reason, I include commentary on what’s happening on eBay and other online venues too. Positive or negative.

Here’s the important part: I have no agenda. I receive no benefit for endorsements. I have nothing to do with paid advertising what-so-ever. I have no preference for one venue over another. Anyone in the business or anyone who dabbles as a hobby is invited to send me their news, information, photos and updates anytime. If you send me more information, your business is likely to get more exposure. My writing here consists of reflections of personal experiences, what I see and hear about town, and what I have learned from reading and research. I also cover current news topics and reactions related to the subject matter as well.

So, just as a restaurant reviewer may write publically about their own impressions of a meal served at any particular establishment (positive and negative), if I attend an auction and it’s evident that the quality of merchandise isn’t all that great, I might discuss it here. If I think people aren’t buying or sellers aren’t making enough, I’m likely to ask a few others in attendance for their views, gather my own thoughts, and write about why that might be.

While oftentimes my announcements of upcoming events and reporting of positive experiences are likely to be highly beneficial for these businesses, I do not put out positive or negative information as a favor to anyone. It's simply a service to the community.

My blogging is NOT for any kind of personal gain. I blog because I enjoy the hobby of secondhand buying and selling myself, AND I love to write! Putting out my honest reflections should demonstrate to readers that my opinions are useful and have merit.

The result should be favorable in the long run... Quite possibly, the next time I blog about an auction that’s coming up with lots of great, high quality merchandise, my readers will trust my opinion and want to show up!

I stumbled across a fun blog this morning where weird eBay listings are highlighted. Claiming to be authentic, today's weird item is a "Small Dead Faerie found in Woods". (Odd way to spell "fairy", isn't it?)

Back-to-school bargain-hunters seek second-hand stores

More teenagers are looking for ways to stretch their dollars while staying trendy with fashion. Secondhand shopping offers possibilities of picking up high-end, popular brands of clothing on the cheap.

While there are no national estimates of the size of the used-clothing industry -- most of the country's 20,000 resale shops are individually owned and many other sellers operate online -- Goodwill Industries reports having sold $1.8 billion worth of donated goods (mostly clothing) at their thrift shops in 2007. That's a significant increase up 67 percent from 2001.

A good friend gave me a great tip. Have you ever considered reusing old costume and beaded jewelry to make new creations? Repurposing elements from vintage pieces can be a creative method of inspiring new designs!

Yard sales, flea markets and thrift stores are wonderful resources for picking up inexpensive jewelry -- often in lots!

Below are a few tips to keep in mind when hunting out secondhand jewelry treasures to repurpose:

Components: Look beyond the overall appearance of an out-dated piece and consider the individual components. Parts and pieces can be repurposed into something new.
Beauty in details: Look out for tiny charms, unique findings, and other decorative elements that can be mixed in with new for a fresh design approach!
Emphasize the positive: Watch out for potential in pieces. Consider if an item will clean up easily or could possibly be taken apart. Focus on those and pass on anything badly damaged or stiffly soldered designs.
Re-style: Creativity is the key. A single earring could become a pendant. Old buttons, computer parts, bottle caps — anything with a hole in it actually — can add whimsy when incorporated into new designs!
Negotiate: Bargaining at yard sales and flea markets is expected. Plus, if you see multiple pieces you like, buying in bulk can often yield fantastic deals!

Alternative selling venues: It makes sense to look beyond eBay

Today a Wall Street Journal news story came out providing an overview of 'the whys' behind so many online retailers jumping off the eBay train.

With eBay's ever-changing policies -- in most cases, not favoring sellers -- more of us who dabble in online sales have been investigating alternate venues. I've been hearing individual stories of seller dissatisfaction with eBay and commenting on the resulting trend of many of them exploring other options for months now. In mounting frustration, some have simply closed their eBay stores.

While many sellers are optimistic for positive income streams passing through other online avenues, the quote below (from today's news story) puts it simply. There's an undeniable reality...

"Entrepreneurs have been trying to displace eBay for years and haven’t managed to do so, says Ms. Mulpuru of Forrester Research. She estimates that nearly one in every five dollars spent online goes to either eBay or Amazon."

It makes sense to experiment with alternate venues. However, it can't be overlooked that the higher exposure your items receive on eBay and Amazon is more promising for sales overall.

Certainly, there's money to be made online wherever there are potential buyers. The challenge for new sites popping up is utimately to attract buyers and keep them coming back. As an online destination, the environment offered will need to both ensure buyer satisfaction over the long haul AND create a worthwhile venue for sellers to invest their time and efforts as well.

Saturday's walk-about 'trailer unload' auction at Danny's Auction Barn in Foster looked more like stuff that should have been placed by the road sporting "free" signs...

I stopped by briefly just to check it out. Here are a few photos, including one extremely oversized and outdated medieval style -- maybe even made of cement?!? -- formal dining room set!

At auctions, bidders are scaling back

A slow economy and changing tastes are resulting in smaller crowds at auction houses and more conservative bids from buyers of antiques and collectibles, the operators of several facilities say.

Although high-end items such as rare paintings and furnishings still draw big bids — particularly from well-heeled European and Asian buyers — the auction house operators say interest in mid-level items is lagging.

Some attribute it to the weak housing market, competition from online sellers and higher prices for everything from food to fuel.

"People aren't out spending like they used to. Decorative items are selling for a fraction of what they have in the past," said Gary Braswell, owner of Stamford Auction Gallery in Norwalk.

An item that sold for $1,000 last year might fetch only $400 this year, he said.

Some auction houses in lower Fairfield County say they have cut back on their auctions, while others say they are offering incentives for bidders such as removing "reserves," or minimum acceptable bids.

As the economy improves and gasoline prices drop, though, auction houses should see improved business, said Nick Perna, economic adviser to Webster Bank and lecturer in economics at Yale University.

"The economy is going to affect your business if you sell stuff that's pretty discretionary, and your customers may have limited funds," Perna said. "People may ask, 'Can I afford to spend $200 on an antique wash basin when I just got my contract from my oil company?'"

In wealthy areas of lower Fairfield County, demographics also may be contributing to the auction house malaise.

"Young people aren't going to auctions to buy items to furnish their homes," said James Lipton, owner of Appraisers Associates of New York and Connecticut Inc., which has offices in New York City and Easton.

Instead, they are shopping at mainline retailers.

Travis Worrell, who runs Westport Auction with partner Kate Wanamaker, said summers usually are slow, but that gas prices have exacerbated it by cutting down on out-of-state visitors.

However, some items are commanding higher prices and attracting enthusiastic bidders, he said, particularly 1950s-era furniture and vintage industrial furniture.

"It's going up every day," Worrell said.

Christine Downing, who operates C. Downing Antiques in Norwalk, said not all items at antiques auctions are producing disappointing numbers.

"The art market is very strong. We sold a painting for $36,000 and another for $22,000," she said, adding that unusual items are finding buyers. "Things that are easy to find are suffering from globalization of our industry."

4 trailer loads of merchandise to be auctioned off Saturday

If you're an auction-goer in eastern Connecticut, when someone mentions a 'field auction,' you probably assume it's happening over at Glass Auctions in Sterling. However, on Saturday at noon, Danny's Auction Barn in Foster, RI is trying out the walk-about concept in his parking lot.

Four huge storage trailers will be unloaded outside the barn and sorted into lots. At auction time, bidders will move along with the auctioneer as he seeks bids going lot to lot.

What's in those trailers is somewhat of a mystery. Lots are expected to be comprised of oddball items leftover from various buy-outs. Typically, it's household goods. There may be a lot of "junk", but you never know... there could be a few prizes in the mix!

If you're curious, come on down tomorrow to Route 6 in Foster. The regular Saturday night General Merchandise auction will also be held at 7 pm, as usual!

Celebrity autographs as investments: Better to keep or sell?

Believe it or not, autographs of the famous can
sometimes be found at yard sales!

Back in 2000 -- with the trend of actors running for office gaining popularity -- Michael Woods must have figured being the sibling of a celebrity couldn't hurt in his quest to be elected mayor of Warwick, Rhode Island. As the younger brother of actor James Woods, his attempt ultimately turned out to be unsuccessful.

The brothers grew up in Warwick, and although James Woods set his sights on Hollywood, he gladly lent his name to his brother's campaign. There were televised ads featuring the actor's endorsement -- as might be expected -- but James also did some door-to-door campaigning with Michael!

Although I wasn't a resident of Warwick, I was living in Rhode Island at the time. I was fortunate enough to run into them... Surprisingly, at a neighborhood yard sale!

Oftentimes, I'd ask one of the kids to accompany me on my Saturday morning treasure hunts. At 12-years-old, this offered my son, Ryan, quality one-on-one time with Mom. Add to that, the good possibility that I might buy something for him -- there was always great incentive!

I love these neighborhood sales where you can simply park in one spot and browse around on foot, checking out what's for sale from yard-to-yard. We were doing just that when we turned a corner and noticed a crowd gathering ahead.

I thought maybe someone had something unusual for sale out on their lawn... maybe cute puppies? But we continued on. Then after checking out a few more sales, we noticed another group gathered further down the a way... At that point, I was too curious. I motioned to Ryan to follow me over there.

Working our way through the crowd, there stood James Woods and his brother, Michael, casually talking to voters and signing autographs. I went over and spoke with them briefly. Ryan and I were both given campaign stickers that James signed in front of us.

Even back then, I was an avid eBayer! And that's where mine ended up, listed within days. It brought a grand total of $35.

Ryan has held onto his. He is a collector. In fact, Ryan keeps many toys from his childhood saved in the original boxes!

Earlier this year, I came across an autographed photo of Billy Joel at a barn sale in Dayville. I found it on an old table among a pile of old magazines and papers.

When I held it up to ask the seller how much, I didn't think he was much aware what he had there. He asked me what it was and I told him, "A photo of Billy Joel."

"Okay", he said, "How does $1 sound?"

Sounded great to me!

I later looked it up on eBay, and I found a similar one -- same photo from his younger days (when he actually had hair) -- but with slightly different wording on the autograph. Mine says, "Cheers!" above his name.

Can these be worthwhile investments?

My recent find got me to wondering about the value in collecting celebrity signatures.

One line of thought is that the worth of such mementos is certainly far greater for the person who was fortunate enough to have been given the autograph directly. After all, the item serves to trigger a memory, revisiting a moment in time.

For me, had I been a great fan of James Woods, I'd probably have held onto the campaign sticker. However, it was a chance meeting and not something I sought after.

On the other hand....

If you are interested in collecting autographs as an investment opportunity, I've researched a few tips:

Learn how to spot fakes. If you haven't been fortunate enough to have been given an autograph firsthand, establishing authenticity can sometimes be difficult because celebrities have been known to change their signatures frequently.
Use common sense. If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Check the proper spelling of the name. Fakes are sometimes misspelled.
Also, note the material on which the item is signed. Laser prints are recent. Obviously, an older signature isn't authentic if it's on newer photo paper.
Some autographs are signed and sent out by celebrity assistants. These are worthless.
Understand that not all autographs will appreciate in value. Certain signatures offer a higher market potential. Those from notorious celebrities, stars who died tragically at a young age, and celebrities with controversial backgrounds are more attractive as investments for collectors.

Tickets for the Jonas Brothers concerts at Madison Square Garden this weekend are being scalped for $2,000 each. The band -- consisting of three brothers -- is currently featured on the cover of “Rolling Stone” magazine. They are hot, hot, hot in the hearts of teen and pre-teen girls everywhere.

In 2006, Joe Jonas’s his brothers recorded a limited-issue CD entitled, “It’s About Time,” with their former label, Columbia. Just 62,000 units sold.

Today, this CD is highly sought-after, starting at $160 on Amazon.com, up from $145 the previous week. On eBay, successful bidders are routinely paying more than $200 a copy right now. These songs are not available on iTunes or any other legal download service.

As a blogger on the subject, I’m constantly on the lookout for fresh ideas to share and inform my readers about bargains to be had in our area. Most often it’s news about local flea markets, yard sales and auctions. But today I wanted to share an idea for a wonderful family activity that can be enjoyed in a big way for a very small cost.

Yesterday morning I had a great time with the kids picking blueberries! It’s relaxing and fun too. Plus, wherever I take my 4-year-old, Katie, she never fails to strike up a conversation with people around us!

My 14-year-old son, Sean, questioned the entertainment value at first, but upon arrival went along. Later he admitted having a good time and even expressed a desire to go back sometime!

For a grand total of $3.15, three of us filled up an old container for baby wipes with plump, delicious, super-healthy blueberries... And returned home with more than enough to go around!

A self-described "blonde bombshell" lady from Australia posted an unusual auction listing on eBay. Featuring bikini-clad photos, she sought bidders to compete for the opportunity to pay for her 4-week vacation -- which was to have started today.

The seller claimed to be a single, 35-year-old charity worker seeking someone to pay for the 4-week holiday, stating that she wanted... "the best time of my life".

"And yes I love to party!!!!!"

One catch, you pick up the tab.....

She insisted in the listing that the winning bidder provide her with her own room.

"I'm putting my four-week holiday in your hands," the ad read.

Bidding reached $1525 by 5.30 pm until eBay Australia removed it.

An eBay spokesperson offered an interesting reason for removal of her listing: 'Some things are just not right.'

With the Democratic National Convention looming, political collectibles are becoming available surrounding the event. Obviously of interest for the historical value, add to that, people like to collect objects that remind them of important events they've experienced. Thus, the popularity of common campaign items such as pins, buttons, bumper stickers and campaign signs, autographed photos, fundraising letters, mugs, and shot glasses.

I recently came across a great antiques appraisal blog by Auction Wally. He has been an auctioneer and appraiser for 25 years. St. James Bazaar offers family fun AND a great flea market!

In Danielson, the St. James Bazaar starts Wednesday evening. The parking lot of St. James School will be packed with carnival rides, musical entertainment and other activities. A massive flea market will be set up in the school gymnasium and also in the basements of both the school and the adjoining St. James Church. It promises to offer everything from furniture and appliances to books, records, CDs, tapes and more! Many vendors will display homemade wares and services as well.

All items in the flea market were donated by parishioners and other local residents in support of the school. Volunteers in pickup trucks have criss-crossed the community gathering donations. Money raised will help to cover the costs of supplies and heat for the school, which go beyond what tuition covers.

Nightly acts for entertainment, food, and carnival rides make for this annual event a popular one! Admission is free. Hours of operation are 5:30 p.m.-10 p.m., Wednesday-Saturday.

Saint James School is located at 120 Water Street, Danielson, CT. The school is easily accessible from Interstate 395. It is in close proximity to intersections of Route 6 and 12.

Harley motorcycle stolen in RI found after 34 years, sold on eBay

A 1971 Harley-Davidson Sportster motorcycle that was stolen nearly 34 years ago in Rhode Island has just resurfaced in central New Jersey. It was discovered when a buyer on eBay inadvertently purchased the stolen bike for $2,400.

After contacting Harley-Davidson for information, the prosecutor’s office learned that the motorcycle was stolen on Halloween way back in 1974 in Providence, R.I.

Apparently, the motorcycle had been bought and sold a few times throughout the years, and the eBay seller was unaware that the bike was stolen property.

The unsuspecting auction winner will be reimburses under eBay's policy protecting those who inadvertently buy stolen vehicles.

Back to school savings... A little early!

I stopped at only one yard sale over the weekend. I happened to drive by the large sign at the end of the street while I was out doing other errands. I was glad I took the detour!

My 14-year-old son is a fast-growing teen. Turns out, lucky for him that I decided to stop at that yard sale because it had a lot of clothing in his size, also appropriate for his age.

In fact, of the nine pieces I picked up, four were brand new with tags! A pair of denim jeans, a Nike muscle jersey, a navy blue Husky tee, and a plaid flannel button front shirt from Cuffy's on the Cape (still in the package) were the best of the lot -- and never worn! Other items included wind pants and various other t-shirts. Well worth $6 for the lot, don't you think?

The cost was of no concern to my son. He was thrilled with the clothes... And I was too!

It doesn’t happen until September 13th, but on Belair Drive in Moosup, Carol Lavigne is well into preparations for this year’s Mammoth Moosup Neighborhood Yard Sale. Carol’s helpers were out and about yesterday, spreading the word to neighbors. Fliers were distributed to each home in the area -- generally those running off or connected to High Street in Moosup.

Each home interested in participating is asked to contribute $5 towards printing and advertising. This is the fourth annual neighborhood yard sale, and Carol is praying for sunshine! It has grown larger every year and people come from far and wide to search out bargains.

Regardless of the weather, this sale goes on, with many sellers set up inside garages and on porches, etc — just in case! Many (but not all) of the participants selling on that Saturday will do it again on Sunday as well.

High-tech, self-cleaning toilets have yet to attract bids on eBay. Not your average bathroom fixture, these are pricey toilets, with starting bids of $89,000 each.

The single-stall stainless steel units have sensors for hand-washing and flushing. They are designed to seal their pneumatic doors to clean the floor and toilet after every flush, and also to prevent anyone from entering while in use.

The city of Seattle decided to remove the German-made Hering-Bau toilets because of maintenance costs and problems with drug use and prostitution.

Having been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to vacation on a cruise ship in recent years, I was curious about the art auctions they offer as a form of entertainment.

An interesting article came out today about a buyer who discovered after making two sizable purchases at a cruise ship art auction, that the prices he paid there were far above prices online for similar works. Buyer beware. Shill bidding is not an uncommon practice designed to drive the price up. All sales at these events are final.

Here’s a tip: Most cruise lines offer online access in their Internet cafes. The art auctions offer a preview before actual bidding begins to allow potential buyers a look ahead of time. If you have your eye on a particular piece, you may want to conduct a little research first.

Repo men chasing more boats; For buyers, bargains can be found at auctions

Watching the repossession television shows can be a form of entertainment for some. But for others, the big squeeze on the economy is hitting close to home.

Repossessions on boats are on the rise. For those who may have benefited in recent years from the real estate boom, in today's downturn, many who could previously afford the toys, now cannot. It’s the mortgage and car payments that get paid first.

Rising gas prices have also made it harder for boat owners to make room in their budgets for trips. Marine diesel fuel costs more than $5 a gallon in some places, which means a five-hour jaunt on the water can easily cost $250 for some gas-guzzling yachts. Last year’s marine diesel cost about $3.40 a gallon.

On the up side, prices for used boats are falling. Repossessed boats under 60 feet may go for as low as 40 percent of what the boat would cost new, and many of them end up at auctions.

Benefit Yard Sale for Kiley Elizabeth Griggs —

Kiley is 14 months old and has Congenital Nephrotic Syndrome and Hepatoblastoma (Liver Cancer). On April 14, she had both kidneys and her liver transplanted. Now her organs are not functioning properly, and she may need new organs. Her family is in dire need of help to defray to the costs of caring for a sick child.

The yard sale is happening today through Sunday, from 8 am To 7 pm at 705 Providence Pike, Danielson (Rt. 6). It's near the South Killingly Fire Station, in the vicinity of Snake Meadow and Cook Hill Roads, and just over the Rhode Island line.

Some of the items offered for sale include baby furniture, antiques, bureaus and tables, a recliner, and children's clothing. Further donations of merchandise for the sale are being accepted.

Monetary donations can also be made directly to a fund set up for Kiley Elizabeth Griggs at New Alliance Bank, in care of Michael A. Sollitro, Admin.

If you're out and about this weekend, plan a stop at this sale. You'll be helping a family in need and you may pick up a few bargains as well!

With a tightening economy, thefts of catalytic converters still a concern

Back in February, I posted news concerning local talk at area auctions among used car dealers. It was about an increase in thefts of catalytic converters from underneath vehicles. With the rising value of precious metals, payouts for these parts (which often contain such metals) are worth the risk for thieves, who will grab the parts quickly by slipping underneath a vehicle with a battery powered hand-saw.

With the tightening economy, such thefts continue to be problematic.

I don't know what the policies are with our local recyclers when it comes to handing over payment for such parts, but this news story reports that in Kentucky, recyclers must copy the driver’s license of anyone trying to sell them metal. They must also hold recently purchased materials for a month to allow stolen items to be reclaimed. Those requirements are not unreasonable.

East Hartford man caught selling illegal copies of TV shows and movies on eBay

Never mind the man I blogged about yesterday who sold “borrowed” library materials on Craigslist, today’s news tells of an East Hartford man who illegally copied movies and TV shows and sold them on eBay. The 53-year-old man used blank DVD discs, video cassettes and other equipment to illegally record at least 55 copyrighted shows. He made more than $100,000, but now he’s facing up to five years in prison.

It all comes down to this: If you don’t own it, you can’t sell it.

Reselling "borrowed" library books turns out to be a bad idea

It's interesting to see how creative people can be when it comes to finding sources of product to sell online.

In a recent blog posting, I shared the story of a young couple who regularly scan through Craigslist's free category and search out curbside freebies to later re-sell for profit.

Well how about this one? A Colorado library patron thought it would be a "novel" idea to re-sell books and DVDs he "borrowed" from the library! A woman who recently purchased books on Craigslist from the man noticed the library identification stamps and called police.

Denver prosecutors report that 34-year-old Thomas Pilaar was sentenced to 10 years in prison and ordered Tuesday to pay $53,549 in restitution. He pleaded guilty in May.

Many eBay sellers are closing stores; Others report what IS selling now

Many local eBay sellers have reported to me that their sales on the site have declined drastically in recent months. And more than a handful have closed down their eBay stores completely. Declining online sales are not unusual for the summer months. Many people are on vacation or just spending more time outdoors rather than sitting at home in front of a computer.

Normally, sales will come up again in mid-August when back-to-school buying starts up. Items like books and anything related to fashion will start to move quickly, but with the increased time spent online, a general upswing across all selling categories is usually reflected.

I have to say, it does look like other conditions are affecting online sales as well these days. First, the economy in general is of great concern. People are worried now in anticipation of how they’ll make ends meet for necessities such as food, gas and heating oil as the cooler months approach. They won't be buying anything extra now.

Then add to the mix the changes eBay has implemented this year which make it somewhat of an unfriendly environment for small time sellers in general. The buyer definitely has the advantage and a lot of sellers are hesitant to risk much in an uncertain market where people simply aren’t spending much.

However -- if you are up for the challenge, I came across an interesting article on what IS selling on eBay these days... If you’re brave enough to give it a try, this article claims that designer handbags, model trains, and used musical instruments are currently doing quite well. Also on the list are digital and 35 millimeter cameras, and scrap gold.

I looked up one of my all time favorite 4th of July events online today, and I discovered a flea market I didn’t know about!

Take a Sunday drive and see the flea market at Seekonk Speedway. Mapquest address is 1710 Fall River Avenue Seekonk, Massachusetts. Many different dealers, so you never know what you’ll find.

Teen charged with offering his Presidential election vote on eBay

It's a felony to offer to sell your vote in the presidential election on eBay. A young man found that out the hard way!

The listing posted by the Minneapolis young man said he was 19 and couldn't decide whom to vote for, so he offered to let the highest eBay bidder decide for him.

Investigators sent a subpoena to eBay and they were given information that led them to Max P. Sanders. He was charged today. Needless to say, his eBay listing was removed as well.

Flea markets everywhere and on the air! Too many now?

There have been a bunch of new flea markets opening in our area recently, and none of them (so far) are big attractions. Let's see... In the last few months, we’ve had new ones crop up in Moosup, Central Village, Foster, RI, Dayville, and most recently in Putnam.

I do think Putnam has potential. Allen’s on Rt. 101 in Dayville seems to have a chance and my guess is that he’ll be there with a few good dealers through this summer at least...

No official announcement has come out of Danny’s Auction Barn in Foster, RI, but it’s not looking too promising over there on Sunday mornings. Their new flea market launched back in April. People were stopping by, but with fewer than 10 dealers each week, it’s not turning out to be a destination for a day trip.

With the economy in the dumps, it would seem reasonable that more people would be shopping secondhand. But are there too many new endeavors within a few miles of each other?

Without enough dealers participating, it can be difficult for new flea markets establish a regular stream of customers. Without a regular stream of customers, dealers are hesitant to invest the time and money required to set up on a weekly basis.

Or, how about a different approach?

If you like country music, you may have caught WCTY’s Sunday Morning Radio Flea Market on the radio Sunday mornings from 7-10 am. The show can be heard the dial at 97.7. Listeners can hear callers seeking buyers for anything from campers to used cars to old wood stoves! If you get tired of driving around, you might want to tune in. Bidding for a bridesmaid? What a creative way to pay for a wedding!

Kelly Gray, a Virginia Beach bride came up with a creative idea to help defray the cost of her upcoming wedding. She posted an eBay auction for a bridesmaid. Her auction pulled in 23 bids, topping at $5,700.

Turns out, the winning bidder was a guy! But he was a representative of Dr Pepper Snapple Group. He told Kelly the beverage company wouldn’t be honoring their $5,700 bid. Instead, they wanted to make a donation of $10,000 for her wedding and supply all of the beverages.

Before the auction idea came about, Kelly, a hairdresser with a 1-year-old daughter, planned with her roofer finance to spend $7,000 on the event. They would make ends meet by baking their own cake, and using an iPod instead of a D J.

Kelly’s story has since received media attention from MSNBC and The New York Times. She gets a wonderful celebration for her marriage, and the beverage company gets lots of publicity!

Painting left at Maryland Goodwill auctions for $40,000

An old painting dropped off at a rural Maryland Goodwill store turned out to be a work by a French Impressionist. And now, thanks to the sharp eye of a store employee, the charitable organization is $40,000 richer.

The Parisian street scene, left at the store in March along with daily donations of pots, pans, old clock radios and other items, turned out to be a work by Edouard-Leon Cortes, probably from the early 20th century.

If the owner of the painting wants the money, he or she may be out of luck. Goodwill says it doesn’t keep track of donors. Donations, meanwhile, are gifts that are considered legal and final transactions.

The bargain that wasn't... My new microwave won’t shut off!

I thought I had found a bargain earlier this week at Home Depot. There were two items I needed that the store offered at great prices. One was a backyard gas grill. At $49, it serves my purposes, brand new in the box too. (Just need a tank now!)

The other thing I needed was a microwave. The store had a small one on sale, also priced at $49. Not bad. But then I noticed a bigger model with more features up on a top shelf. It had a sticker on it, “Damaged”.

If you read my haggling story from last month, you know that Home Depot will routinely discount damaged or flawed items. (And sometimes perfect items as well -- if you ask!)

Okay... So I looked over the microwave. On the back corner, the casing was dented. Otherwise, it appeared to be fine. Hmmm... I thought it was good enough. Larger, with more features... I can live with the dent in the back. It was loaded into my cart and lugged home.

My son, Ryan, 19, was visiting later that evening. He’s a great kid, and always willing to give me a hand with whatever needs to be done around the house. I gave him my handyman list of to-dos, which included assembling my new grill and helping me to find the best spot in the kitchen for the new microwave. As I looked over the paperwork that came with it, Ryan plugged it in. As soon as it was fed electricity, it was running at full power — without having been turned on. We hit the ‘clear’ button and another we thought might stop it, but to no avail. I went through the manual, again and again. The only way to stop it was to open the door and/or unplug the thing.

One might think if the store is selling a damaged item, that it would still be in good working order as far as function is concerned. Today my own to-do list includes trying to return my new “damaged” microwave. It wasn’t such a great bargain after all.

Putnam Flea Market off to quiet start

On Sunday I decided to check out Putnam’s new flea market. There was a steady stream of traffic going in and out despite the impending rain. The setting is gorgeous! Dealers were set up in a lot with shady trees and the water just beyond that. On the other side is an old mill.

There weren’t a lot of dealers though... Maybe a dozen or so. However, their displays included an interesting assortment of unusual items, a pretty eclectic mix of merchandise -- mostly antiques. Nicely done. I just wish there was more of it!

My stop was brief for another reason as well. My 4-year-old daughter spotted a vintage toy that I was not going to buy for her amusement, and she put up a fuss... That always means time to go.

Shortly afterwards, the sky opened and rain poured! I hope everyone was able to pack up quickly enough.

Drivers Log 30 Billion Fewer Miles in US Since Last November

A recent report states that Americans have cut back 30 billion miles of driving over the last six months. The drop was measured between November 2007 - April 2008, and is the largest change in driving since the fuel crisis of 1979-1980. With fuel prices looking to stay high, it may represent permanent change in the way Americans think about travel .

Putnam's new flea market - It's not so typical!

An article in today’s Norwich Bulletin makes the announcement: Flea market ready to roll in Putnam. You can bet I’ll be there to check it out. I first announced this project a month ago, and there’s much more in the works than the article mentions.

Greg Renshaw is an interesting man — and certainly a man with vision. Putnam’s newest business venture shouldn’t be confused with your average flea market. It’s not slated to be what you might imagine with table after table of old stuff piled on, just a stop short of the dump. Greg’s vision includes not only the sale of secondhand goods (dealers as well as individuals are welcome to sell), but also a unique display of architectural elements, an eclectic assortment of movie props, plus an area showcasing an array of one-of-a-kind vehicles — including planes & boats!

Even if you’re not a flea market enthusiast, it’s definitely worth a visit -- if only to see firsthand what new ideas are happening in our typically Quiet Corner.

Check it out on Sunday. The flea market is located in the area of downtown Putnam at Cargill Falls, 58 Pomfret Street. Hours are 8 am to 3 pm, to be held every Sunday.

Frustrated sellers have nothing to say when eBay buyers back out

This morning I came across a blogger voicing frustrations about eBay's recent changes in feedback. Her husband was selling a motorcycle on the site, and their 'buyer' backed out of the deal after winning the auction. A winning bid creates a contract, and rightfully, the buyer should be required to make payment and complete the deal.

Frustration was amplified for this couple in that after getting the run-around from the buyer, they were left unable to post negative feedback.

I had a similar experience last week. I sold an outdoor fire pit to a woman who purchased it through eBay's 'Buy-It-Now' for a Father's Day gift. This was the Tuesday before Father's Day. After being invoiced, payment never arrived. On top of that, she resides outside the US. Finally, I received an email from her over the weekend stating that because the package would not have arrived in time for her to give it to her father on Sunday, she decided to instead purchase another one locally.

That's nice. She has a '1' for feedback. I won't be the one to give her number a '2'. But I also cannot report on my experience in dealing with this buyer in any public manner.

Recycling freebies: A creative method of making ends meet

At a dinner party over the weekend, I had an interesting conversation with a a young couple. After talking about my blog, the wife told me about a creative strategy they use in conjunction with Craigslist to help make ends meet.

For those who may not be familiar with Craigslist, it's an online classified ad site. Listing and browsing are completely free of charge.

This couple has a new baby and they both work, so they've got to be incredibly busy. But whenever there's a chance, they scour over Craigslist's 'Free' category, and look for anything they suspect has a resale value.

Then they resell it. In most cases, all they do is take a clear photograph, write up a detailed description, and repost the same item in the appropriate category, right back on Craigslist.

Not a bad idea really, for anyone who has the time and is willing to put forth the effort.

I'm sure there are people who may be moving who need to unload still-usable goods quickly. Or how about a family wrapping up an unsuccessful yard sale? Although donation is a better solution for most, many charitable organizations send out trucks to certain areas only a few times a month.

Posting a Craigslist ad for a freebie can be a better option than placing something on the curbside. Your giveaways will get far more exposure. However, use caution, as there's always the chance of attracting undesirables. Your neighbors may not appreciate it.

In any event, unless there are huge "FREE" signs along with your goods, many passers-by will hesitate to take advantage of your public offer.

Coincidentally, on Saturday afternoon, I scored a neat find for my 4-year-old when I saw one of those signs. I followed a yard sale posting in the afternoon, but by the time we arrived, the sale had ended and everything was placed at the end of a driveway with the big "FREE" sign. Katie squealed with excitement as she spotted the Little Tykes washer and dryer set immediately. She was lucky my trunk was empty! The set was clean and in great shape.

Better than throwing away usable items, offering free goods is definitely an option to consider. Good can come of it. Your efforts could brighten the day of a little girl or even provide a way for a young couple to raise funds make ends meet!

When it meets a need, curbside freebies are always great to come by!

To bid or not to bid: Buying at auction with friends

It’s not uncommon for regular auction-goers to strike up friendships with other attendees. And oftentimes, groups of friends will plan an evening out to attend an auction together. It’s an enjoyable time and interesting to exchange opinions about an item’s worth when it’s up on the block.

But what happens when an item comes up at auction that both you and your friend would like to own?

I’ve seen friends outbid each other in a frenzy -- usually with boisterous laughter -- all in a sense of good, competitive fun.

But more often, I’ve noticed friends refrain from bidding at all once they’ve realized who they’re bidding against.

Here’s my approach: If I’ve invited someone to come along with me to the auction, I’ll back off and let them bid. Just being gracious. Since I attend frequently, it’s more likely that I’ll come across a similar bargain offered at another time. No point in driving the price up.

But if it’s someone I’m friendly with who regularly attends the auction I’m bidding against, every item is fair game.

I've occasionally had the experience of someone taking offense when I bid against them. I don’t understand that reaction. We’re all there to participate, and competitive bidding shouldn’t be taken personally. We all know the rules, and bidding is what we’re there to do. Whoever is willing to pay more, wins. If I’m not willing to pay as much, then that item is not so valuable to me... Let’s play!

Here’s another interesting observation about bidding: Couples can be entertaining to watch.

It works both ways, but more often, the husband is the bidder and the wife is the nudger. If he gets up to go to the bathroom or snack bar, she’ll bid on her own.. and with greater frequency! Husbands too. When the wife isn’t in the next seat to him, he’ll buy a lot more — usually for stuff that ends up in the garage. It’s funny; especially when the auctioneer makes public notice of it!

It was a busy weekend for resale

The weekend was a busy one for yard salers. In spite of the intense temperatures, people sat out with their goods and others stopped to shop. Top pick of the weekend was Colchester’s 27th annual Tag Sale on the Green, which was held on Sunday. It was a huge success.

In news up north, Allen’s Auction Hall is trying something new. Over the weekend, owner Allen Bourdia and his wife had tables set up inside and out -- along with a few dealers -- at the auction hall on Route 101 in Dayville. People were stopping. Added to that, there was a giant tag sale set up directly across the street at a private home, and another just a few houses down the street. Allen said he plans to continue the indoor/outdoor flea market on weekends throughout the summer months.

Last week, word was out among auction-goers that Allen’s auctions were ending and that a flea market would take place instead. However the Auction-Zip Web site does list weekend general merchandise auctions for this Saturday and Sunday at 5 pm on their online calendar.

For sellers, new eBay policies require shifting strategies

A bit of advice from the Creative eBay Selling Newsletter...

If you've been paying even slight attention to eBay lately, you've seen several changes.

This article isn't another "gripe" session though. You can find those easily in many other places.

First, let's talk about your eBay feedback score as a seller. eBay has recently started counting "neutral" feedback marks as negative for the purpose of calculating your feedback rating. In one swoop millions of accounts went from perfect to less than perfect.

I think this change actually helped eBay catch up with the rest of the world... I'll explain in a moment.

First, the bright side of this eBay change is that if you can manage to keep your feedback high you'll REALLY stand out now. I went from 100% to 99.5% myself and I'm still doing fine.

BUT... It's now more important than ever that you educate your customers on the importance of good feedback.

Here are a couple ideas:

> IMMEDIATELY leave feedback for all customers that buy from you. There is no benefit in waiting since you can no longer leave them neutral or negative feedback as a seller.

> Next, in all "post sale" email and shipping correspondence with customers include a statement something like this (even BEFORE they pay):

We just left you positive feedback on eBay. Anything short of your 5 Star 100% positive feedback back to us considered to be a TOTAL FAILURE ON OUR PART because we want you 100% happy. Does that sort of thing bother you? Do you feel like you have to "cower" to the customer now?

I hear some eBay seller moaning statements like, "one little complaint can leave such a permanent stain."

One of the reasons I like eBay as a training ground for bigger and better online projects is that it teaches you valuable lessons along the way.

I've done business with literally tens of thousands of customers and you'll be hard pressed to find complaints ANYWHERE. What you will find is RAVE REVIEWS.

My little secret is very simple.

I can't possibly expect every customer to be exceedingly happy with what they purchase, but how can they possibly complain if we go above an beyond to be available to them after the sale and quickly fix whatever issues come up? This includes extra bonuses, speedy support, and when necessary low resistance refunds.

Once again, the eBay training ground teaches us lessons if we'll pay attention.
